How to restore a website from backup (before you need to)
The calm, step-by-step restore process for files and databases — practice it once so a bad day becomes a ten-minute fix.
The day something breaks is the wrong day to learn restores. Here is the process — practice it once on a subdomain and bad days become ten-minute fixes.
Scenario A: you broke one file (most common)
Kairalmas file manager keeps 24-hour file versions. Right-click the file → restore previous version. Fixed before your tea cools.
Scenario B: the whole site is broken (bad update)
1. Files: upload your last full backup ZIP, extract over public_html (or restore via the panel)
2. Database: phpMyAdmin → select database → Import → your .sql backup
3. Config check: database name/user/password in your site's config must match the restored ones
4. Click through the site on a phone and a laptop
Scenario C: hacked site
1. Change ALL passwords (hosting, database, admin)
2. Restore from a backup dated BEFORE the infection
3. Update everything before going back online
4. Find the entry point (usually an outdated plugin) or it happens again
The practice drill (once a quarter)
Create a subdomain → restore your backup there → click through → delete it. Now you know the steps, the time it takes, and that your backups are real.
Prevention beats restoration
Kairalmas file versioning handles the daily oops; scheduled backup plugins handle the weekly; your monthly laptop download handles the catastrophic. Three layers, near-zero cost, total peace of mind.
