The batch workflow: 500 product photos to WebP in one evening
Batch-convert hundreds of product photos to WebP: XnConvert/squoosh workflows, naming conventions, folder structure and the upload pipeline.
One hundred unoptimized product photos = a 4MB-per-page store nobody waits for. The batch conversion turns the whole catalog around in one evening. Here is the pipeline.
The tools (pick one)
- XnConvert (free, Windows/Mac): drag hundreds of files, one recipe, export all — the workhorse
- Squoosh (browser): best quality control, one file at a time — for heroes and top sellers
- WordPress auto-conversion (LiteSpeed Cache): future uploads handled automatically
The XnConvert recipe (set once, reuse forever)
1. Input: your photo folder
2. Output tab: format WebP, quality 80, resize longest side 1200px
3. Convert — 500 files in minutes
The naming convention (saves future-you)
product-name-1.webp, product-name-2.webp — lowercase, hyphens, no spaces or Urdu characters. The file manager and URLs stay clean forever.
The upload pipeline
1. Zip the converted folder (contents at top level)
2. Upload in the file manager, extract
3. Update image references (or the store's product pages point at the new names)
4. Hard-refresh and verify: page weight in the browser's Network tab should drop 60–70%
The before/after to expect
Typical 100-product store: 4.2MB homepage → 1.3MB. On Pakistani 4G: 6+ seconds saved on first load. Bounce drops, pages-per-visit rises — the analytics confirm within a week.
The maintenance habit
Every new product follows the recipe at creation time (or the plugin converts automatically). The evening you spend today is the last slow-page evening your store ever has.
